Mr Brainwash (b. 1966, France)
Thierry Guetta, better known as Mr Brainwash, is an LA based street pop artist and filmmaker. Known for unabashedly subverting appropriated cultural imagery from fellow street artists (most notably Banksy), Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and pop culture, Mr. Brainwash has transformed a multitude of iconic images into his own internationally recognized style.
The documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop” was shot and comprised of videos taken by Thierry Guetta over nearly a decade. While the graffiti movement has been around for over 50 years, he has helped usher in the appreciation of the street art movement world-wide in the 21st century. Moving away from solely spray paint, Mr Brainwash worked with artists Space Invader, Shepard Fairey, and Banksy who were using posters, stickers, and sculptures to evoke a response from the public.
Mr Brainwash is a big proponent of positive slogans such as “Follow Your Dreams”, and Life is Beautiful”. He makes work on paper and canvas using all different types of media including spray paint, stencil, acrylic and collage. He has pushed the envelope when it comes to allowing street art to go from the walls outside to the walls in museums and galleries.
He has donated works to charities internationally and uses his world travel as a means to educate and engage the general public in the arts. Mr Brainwash explains, “Art shouldn’t be serious, it is freedom of expression for everyone. Art doesn’t have a manual saying you can’t do this and that…Anybody can be an artist.”
In December 2022, the Mr Brainwash Art Museum opened in Beverly Hills, CA. Full of interactive installations, larger-than-life object sculptures, it’s a place that encapsulates Mr Brainwash’s personal mantra: Life Is Beautiful.
