Alberto Murillo (b. 1974, Spain)

Alberto Murillo is a self-taught painter and native of Madrid, Spain who started his career as an interior designer.

Color, shape, and paint application are three of the most important elements to Murillo’s studio practice. It’s clear that Spain has influenced his color palette when one sees the warm reds, oranges, and yellows that so often grace the surfaces of his canvases.

Color field painting is a style of abstract painting that is closely related to what Murillo does. While Murillo uses acrylic on canvas with large blocks of solid color, the texture from the paint adds a component to break up the repetition. Patterns are used which lull the viewer into a sense of familiarity, yet the visible brushstrokes appearing in varying directions contrast with the shapes, introducing a new and compelling element.

His large works, usually around 48 x 48 in, are dynamic with vibrating energy. Titles like, High Frequency, My Wave, and Feel, give a sense to the way sound and music impact his compositions. Repeating shapes and lines that don’t quite match up accentuate the feeling of motion. 

Murillo’s work has been shown in over 60 exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, and his paintings are celebrated across the United States and throughout Europe. He currently lives in NYC where he has a Brooklyn studio.
