Hanahime (The Flower Princess)

laminated glass, ceramic
25 x 6.4 x 6.4 in

The Goshintou series are sculptures of lamps by Satoshi Nishizaki. They are inspired by “t?r?” or lanterns that are placed at the front of Buddhist temples throughout Japan. The practice of placing the lanterns began by a desire to dedicate a pure light for Buddha or the deities at the temple. Hanahime projects the image of a lily, the flower spirit who prays for happiness. It signifies honor, purity and truthfulness – the virtues associated with lilies in Japanese culture. Nishizaki created this sculpture with the prayer that families and friendships will enjoy happiness.
