Hunt Slonem (1951, USA)
Slonem was born in Maine and studied at Tulane University and Skowhegan School of Painting. His studio is in Manhattan where he paints five days a week, 40 something weeks a year and travels around the world on the other days to go to his exhibitions.
According to the New York Times, he fell in love with "a very particular kind of New York life, one most people can only fantasize about. But people this determinedly unusual do exist here, and that is one of the city's surest charms. They feed off the city and the city feeds off them." Although Slonem has lived in New York City for 50 years, his boyhood fascination with the exotic has stuck with him and is the foundation of his work. He surrounds himself with animals to bring nature to him. 60 birds, mostly parrots, and lots of Star of India tortoises make up just some of his pets.
“I would say my whole life could be summed up by the word 'exotica'.”
—Hunt Slonem
Bunnies, birds, and butterflies are a common motif throughout Slonem’s work. But it isn’t just about animals. He says, “It’s nature in general and the Garden of Eden and the symbolic reference of the butterfly and metamorphosis and ascension. I don’t think there’s anything more inspiring than nature as a source of subject matter. Everything about it has captivated me: the intrinsic forms, the colors, the behavioral tendencies, the spiritual symbolism, the environments in which they were created after 60 million years of evolution like in the rainforest that is sadly disappearing before us – all these myriad forms and shapes. Humans are mostly similar, but animals are so varied.”
Slonem has had many life-changing experiences out in nature, away from the man-made world. One such event was witnessing five million hummingbirds hovering at an aloe plantation in Dominica. Seeing the iridescent cloud created by all those unique birds was a thrill that he imbues into his work.
Why so many bunnies? In the 1990s, Slonem discovered he was born under the year of the rabbit. He was pleased because of the positive associations with it – luck and productivity. When one looks at Slonem’s bunny busts or small bunny portraits, they will notice the individual personalities from one piece to another. Slonem enjoys displaying the small 8 x 10 inch bunny paintings as a grouping of 50 to 100. In the way that innumerous blades of grass grow together, or millions of unique snowflakes fall as one, he’s making mass amounts of the same symbol, but all with variation. No two are the same and they’re made with care, one at a time.
