Through the combination of painting machines and the physical hand, each Reichert painting is as unique as a fingerprint.
Marco Reichert (b. 1979, Germany)
Bender Gallery is pleased to be the US representation of international artist Marco Reichert. Marco Reichert constructs his own painting machines which are similar in function to a large plotter head. These machines paint bold marks with oil paint on loose canvas and although it’s digital, there are intentional imperfections in the way the paint is applied to the canvas, similar to human error when painting by hand.
These lines are paired with other layers made from the physical action of Reichert’s body. Sometimes he works on his hands and knees on the unstretched canvas, painting with oil, acrylic, spray paint, enamel, resin, and ink. Working wet into wet, brushes and spatulas are used to uncover and apply distinct gestural marks. This is the unique quality of Reichert’s work. He leaves behind his pronounced indexical mark by combining the immediacy of painting with the layering of paint machine streaks.
Let’s look at untitled S9.20. The crackling almost honey-like texture in the lower background is like the surface of a different planet. The black implied oval floats ominously with white chalky strokes of paint in the foreground. The mossy green feels like the air quality dispersing in this imagined planet. Each viewer will find their own interpretation of these expressive and bold works.
Reichert studied Information Technology before going on to earn his Master’s degree in Painting from Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin. With that in mind, his works are a combination of painting, graffiti, and computer art. He works with traditional processes like lithography, while also designing code to be used to create the textures on his canvas. His paintings juxtapose the seemingly randomness of abstract painting with the precision of technology. Reichert’s work is reflective of today’s society, a society that is increasingly dominated by computers and technology.
Reichert has taken part in solo and group shows in such prestigious international institutes and galleries as the RIBOT gallery, Milan, Kunstverein Weinheim, Collection Baumgärtner, Weinheim (2014); Herbert-Gerisch Stiftung, Neumünster (2014); Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlino (2011); Freies Museum Berlin, Berlin (2010); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2009), and many others. Reichert currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
